四位梵志各自作好决定，临行之际向国王辞别，说道：我们的寿命只剩七天了，现在我们将各自以神通脱免无常，避开死劫之后，再前来觐见国王。请大王善自珍重，进德修业，护祐人民。向国王辞别后，四人便各自离去，前往自己预设的躲藏之处。

七日期满，这四位梵志都不免一死，就像熟透的果实终会落下。市集的监长前去报告国王：有一位梵志死于市集之中。国王当即了知：四位梵志都想要逃避死亡，现在已有一人往生，其余三人岂能幸免？

于是，国王立即命人驾车来到佛陀所在的精舍，恭敬顶礼佛陀后，退坐一旁，虔心请示：世尊！近来有梵志兄弟四人，皆获五种神通，知道自己的寿命将尽，便各自到自认为安全的地方躲避，不知他们现在是否都逃过了死难？

世尊对国王开示：生为人者，有四件事无法逃避。第一，在中阴身时，不得不受生；第二，从母胎出生后，就必定会渐渐老去；第三，老了以后，就不得不生病；第四，遭病难者，最后也免不了一死。世尊随即说了一偈：

非空非海中　非入山石间　无有地方所　脱之不受死　是务是吾作　当作令致是

　人为此躁扰　履践老死忧　知此能自静　如是见生尽　比丘厌魔兵　从生死得度

有聚必有散，有生必有死，任谁也无法逃避。一般人面对周遭亲友的死亡，免不了感伤、痛苦，甚至逃避，这是因为无法接受生、老、病、死必然之现象。即使成就五种神通，若未能漏尽烦恼，纵然极尽神通，仍须受无常业力之逼迫。

this man and that man are divorced women ──已生善念令增长，未生善念令速生；已生恶念令灭除，未生恶念令不生的原则，以善念舍除恶念，进而连善念也不生，回归不生不灭的清净自性，才能真正地出离生死、解脱自在。
