但是,即使有这刹那的欢愉和了解,即使曾有这神秘经验的片刻,旧日习惯的逻辑思考和怀疑仍然从中作梗。我会告诉自己,也许她只是特例,或凭借某种通灵的能力。虽然这能力本身已很可观,但并不足以证明轮回或灵魂存在。可是,我读过的上千个案例,几乎都呼应凯瑟琳的说法,比如能说外国语的小孩、前世致命的伤口成为今生的胎记、知道千里以外宝藏埋藏的地点、多年前某个特殊的事件。我了解凯瑟琳的个性和心性,知道她会做什么、不会做什么。不,这次我的心智不能再愚弄我。这些证明太强大有力了,它们是真的,凯瑟琳还可以在日后的诊疗中证明更多。

接下来的几周,有时我会忘记这次的力量与启示,有时我会陷进日常生活的轨道,担心平时会记挂的事。怀疑仍会浮上心头。似乎当心智不专注时,我仍倾向于过去的模式、思考和怀疑主义。但那时我会提醒自己它真的发生过!我了解没有亲身经验要相信这些观念有多么困难。对于理性了解之外的情绪接受,经验是必要条件,但是经验的冲击总是随时日而消退。

起先,我不明白自己怎么变了那么多。我知道自己变得较有耐性而平和,别人告诉我,我看起来非常安详、快乐、镇定。我觉得生命中有更多希望、喜悦,更多目标和更多的满足。我明白自己不再有死亡的恐惧,不怕自己的去世或不存在,也比较不怕失去他人,虽然我会很想念过世的亲人。死亡的恐惧力量惊人,处处可见人类对这种恐惧的逃避:中年危机、与年轻人发生婚外情、整容、勤于运动、累积财富、生小孩以延续自己的后代、费尽心机想变得年轻等等。我们是如此忧惧于自己的死亡,有时甚至忘了活着的真正目的。

我也变得不那么严肃执著,我并不需要时刻绷得紧紧的,不过虽然我不想那么严肃,这个改变还是有点困难,我要学的还很多。

现在我的理智确实开放了,愿接受凯瑟琳所说是真的的可能性。有关我父亲和我儿子的细节,是无法从旁的途径获得的。

她的知识和能力显然可以证明一种超凡的心灵能力。相信她是有道理的,不过我对一些通俗文学中的论调仍持怀疑看法。这些说得出许多心灵现象、死后生命的人是谁?他们受过科学的观察和求证吗?虽然有此次经验,依着怀疑的个性,我仍会对日后每个新事实、新资料做审慎评估。我会检查它们是否合于已建立的架构,会从每个角度去测试。但我也不能否认,架构已经在那里了。
